Woodside Deli Closes in Silver Spring After Seven Decades

October 7, 2019
MCS Staff

Woodside Deli has been a household name for over 70 years, but this morning we received word that the Silver Spring location has closed.

We called the location to ask if the Deli is closed permanently and were told “We are closed and we don’t have any other answers for you.”

The Rockville location told us that they will be happily serving the Montgomery County community and that they did not have any answers regarding the Silver Spring location.

A Silver Spring deli and catering business that was established in 1947 was recently listed as being under contract on the business-for-sale website BizBuySell.

We were previously told the Germantown location no longer has any connection to the original deli.

Well that’s it…..Silver Spring no longer exists.

There’s still Parkway deli!! My husband and I had breakfast at Woodside frequently when we started dating and lived in Lyttonsville. Always sad when a local treasure closes up shop.

Parkway Deli is still there though!

    • Mary Schmitt on October 7, 2019 at 6:32 pm

      Not. The. Same.

    • Teej on October 8, 2019 at 2:08 am

That is like saying, “There is always the Tastee Diner!” Yuck

      • Bruce on October 9, 2019 at 8:01 pm

Always such a happy place staff always smiling and making you feel important. Maybe we just didn’t go there enough.

      • John Vreeland on October 10, 2019 at 11:06 pm

Tastee Diner is what it is. You could always go around the corner and pay twice as much for dinner.

I am not looking forward to this!

    • Gene Meyer on October 7, 2019 at 4:46 pm

All that wall memorabilia! All that history! All that pickle bar! Tragic.

  4. Carol Conway on October 7, 2019 at 4:06 pm

This is so sad. That place was always reliable and delicious. Damnit.

Really only been in there once, bec. I don’t live in that area, but my friends from the area loved it!

As much as I loved going there, I think the demise has to be in part to its self-neglect. It always frustrated me to watch it deteriorate in plain view, with nothing appearing to be done to maintain it or improve it.

    • Antonia JOHNSON on October 8, 2019 at 1:46 pm

Deli fan, spot on. Driving by, in the last few years, I wondered if it had already closed.

  9. Kate on October 7, 2019 at 5:16 pm

This is terrible. Another to add to the list. I still miss Giffords on Georgia Ave!!

Mediocre food, cranky wait staff, not enough parking, smelly bathrooms ….,everything you cherish in a greasy spoon ?!! Missing it already.

If you want to contact the landlord, here you go-
I understand memorabilia is going to the Rockville location. This is heartbreaking. 🙁

We had breakfast there after Church yesterday. No signs and not a word from our waitress who I’ve known for quite a few years. It was business as usual. Please let Nick’s Diner stick around awhile longer.

Staff was informed of the development at 4 pm Sunday. Thanks Woodside deli.

So sad!!!! Add another loss to moco.
Mr Ts and silo inn, pumpernickels, Mongolian grille and Giffords. So many landmark restaurants gone!

  15. Len Rickman on October 7, 2019 at 7:42 pm

We will miss having a restaurant with a broad menu less than two miles from home. Hopefully something similar will replace Woodside.

    • James Cavender on October 8, 2019 at 6:29 pm

It will either be replaced by Spanish or Asian. American food is harder to find around here now as we have seen.

WE loved going there for Sunday breakfast! So sad to see an ICON close its doors.

Oh man,,,another ones bites the dust. I wonder what they will do with all the memorabilia on the walls,,my dad gave them at least 10 old pics. =*(

Here’s a video review of the Woodside Deli from YouTube’s TidyislandCPA channel. Relive the experience.

  19. Joe Simpich on October 8, 2019 at 7:20 am

I’ve missed this place for years since the original staff and owners left. The menu was reduced considerably, too. The Woodside we all fondly remember has actually been gone for quite a while…

  20. Janet Howard on October 8, 2019 at 9:29 am

Thank you Alex Tsronis for reporting the whole truth about the Deli’s closing. The owner listed the business and sold it before the “abrupt” closing. The owners were even willing to finance the potential new buyer. Not a surprise under those conditions.

  21. Rick Stewart on October 8, 2019 at 12:43 pm

I loved the place but I rarely went because of the traffic and parking hassle. Shame, I’ll miss it!

  22. Conscientia on January 4, 2020 at 8:59 pm

Sorry, but it had lost its way some time ago and I stopped going when they could no longer make an acceptable corned beef sandwich even after my complaints.

  23. Matthew Wilkins on January 21, 2020 at 11:31 pm

Much of the pictures from the walls, and some of the staff has moved to the Rockville Woodside Deli, across the street from the courthouse. Same wonderful service, food & pickle bar. Go support them!
