Top 10 Pizza Spots in MoCo

We have teamed with the Director of Operations from a major local restaurant group to put together a list of the best pizza in MoCo. After taking his input into consideration, our team of experts (people who eat a lot of pizza) have ranked the top 10 pizza spots in the county.

The restaurants we selected have at least one Montgomery County, MD. location, and delivery chains are not included. We are including the Yelp rating of the restaurant (or highest Yelp rating if there are multiple MoCo locations) just for reference. Please keep in mind that Yelp reviews take more than just the food into account and this list is based strictly on the taste of the pizza.

There are over 100 restaurants that are eligible for this list, so this wasn’t easy…

*Note: We did not include Ledo Pizza and &Pizza because we feel they have gotten “too big” for this list.

Just missed: Pete’s New Haven Style Apizza (Silver Spring), Pieology (Gaithersburg), Julliano’s (Gaithersburg), Stella Barra Pizzeria (North Bethesda), Sole D’Italia (Silver Spring), Pizza Stop (Silver Spring), Pizza CS (Rockville and #1 on Yelp), Mamma Lucia (Multiple locations), Matchbox (Rockville), Inferno (Gaithersburg), M&N’s (Bethesda), Maggi’s (Damascus), Pazzo Pamodoro (Clarksburg).

10. Slice of Rockville (Rockville). Yelp Rating: 4.5 stars.
Solid crust, solid sauce, solid cheese…overall a very solid pizza. Every now and then, you’ll hear Slice of Rockville mentioned as someone’s favorite and I’ve never heard anyone say they didn’t like it. Buy 1, get 1 50% off on Mondays!

9. Pi Pizzeria (Bethesda) Yelp: 4 stars.
When I am in the mood for a deep dish, Chicago style pizza I go to Pi Pizzeria and order the South Side Classico. This is a traditional Chicago style pizza with the tomato sauce on top of the cheese, so it may not be for everyone, but if it is your thing… I highly recommend it.

8. Frankly…Pizza! (Kensington) Yelp Rating: 4 stars.
I’m usually not a big fan of brick oven pizza, but Frankly was able to give me an airy, soft crust with a little bit of char on it (usually charred crust means crispy). There was lots of flavor with the pizza and has gotten so popular that they sometimes aren’t able to do carry-out because of how busy the restaurant gets.

7. Vace (Bethesda) Yelp Rating: 4 stars.
Many refer to Vace as “the hidden gem of Bethesda.” This tucked away, carry-out only spot sells whole pizzas and pizza by the slice. I’m not a big toppings guy, but when I go to Vace I always add something to make more…Italian-y.

6. Mangino’s (Germantown) Yelp: 3.5 stars.
Don’t let the fact that it’s located at a gas station deter you. Mangino’s has the cheesy, greasy, tasty type of pizza you would imagine the Ninja Turtles eating in their sewer, and for me… that’s a good thing. This is what comes to mind when I think of pizza.

5. Sugo Osteria (Potomac) Yelp: 4 stars.
I refer to this kind of pizza as gourmet pizza. You don’t go to Sugo to get a cheese or pepperoni pizza (unless you do…). Try one of their specialty pizzas and be amazed. Fresh ingredients, great taste.

4. Gentleman Jim’s (Gaithersburg) Yelp: 3.5 stars.
A lot of folks from upper half of the county swear by Gentleman Jim’s pizza. It’s kind of like a mix between Ledo pizza and Continental (#2 on our list) with a twist. That twist…is Swiss. It’s not common, but you’ll find Swiss cheese on GJ’s pizza.

3. Giuseppi’s (Rockville/Gaithersburg) Yelp: 3.5 stars.
I absolutely love Giuseppi’s pizza and think it would be able to challenge for the #1 spot if they did something with the crust. There’s nothing wrong with it, but it’s average, and the pizza itself is well above average. Ask them for their secret XL pizza…they’ll give you an entire pizza made of slices the size of their lunch special slices (pretty big). It doesn’t always work, but always a bonus when it does.

2. Continental Pizza (Kensington) Yelp 4 stars.
You’re gonna need cash at Continental (that’s all they accept), but it will be money well spent. This square cut pizza has more volume than others like it. With a good amount of cheese and a smooth sauce, you can’t go wrong with Continental.

1. Stained Glass Pub (Silver Spring) Yelp 3.5 stars: The pizza is unbelievable. Think Ledo Pizza with a better tasting crust. Their large is MASSIVE and I have been known to eat half of it by myself. A must for any pizza lover (dine-in on a Monday or Tuesday and get the pizza for half price!).

Stay tuned for our Top Brunches in MoCo list!
