Rachel Carson, Author of “Silent Spring,” Lived in Montgomery County.

In 1956, ecologist and writer Rachel Carson moved into her new house in the White Oak area of Montgomery County at 11701 Berwick Road. She planted evergreen trees in her yard to create a natural wooded area.

There, she began working on her new book, “Silent Spring.”

Carson published her ground-breaking book in 1962, which detailed the dangers of pesticides to the environment and questioned society’s relationship to nature. Her research is credited for outlawing the use of the hazardous pesticides such as DDT and sparking the Environmental Movement.

Carson died on April 14, 1964 from cancer in her White Oak home. Her house is currently the headquarters of the Rachel Carson Landmark Alliance (RCLA), where they maintain the building and work towards keeping Carson’s legacy alive.

Rachel Carson Elementary School in Gaithersburg is named in her honor.
