Hidden Gems: Wagging Tails Thrift Store and The Museum of Obsolete Technology in Rockville

A few blocks away from the Montgomery County Humane Society in Rockville is Wagging Tails Thrifts & Gifts, a 12,000 sq. ft. secondhand store that is run by the Humane Society.  The store helps generate additional funds for the Humane Society by selling donated items like used books, clothing, and jewelry.  It also features M.O.O.T, The Museum of Obsolete Technology. More of a display than an actual museum, M.O.O.T. is a collection of vintage records, 8-track players, and almost any other retro gadget you could imagine. Here’s a virtual tour of some of the items you’ll find inside Wagging Tails and at the museum:

When you first enter you’ll find several displays with fancy table sets, couches, and furniture. These are the nicer and more valuable items available in the store.

You’ll then enter the main area of Wagging Tails.  Here you will find your traditional mix of thrift shop items:

Porcelain Dolls

Holiday Décor

Glassware

King Tut

A huge book section

Further towards the back you will reach the “museum.” Here’s a few of our favorite things:

Items in the museum are not for sale, including this VHS tape.

A CD listening station

7″ Records

A great collection of local concert posters, including one from the Beatles first US concert, which took place in Washington, DC in 1964.
