Moorenko’s is coming to Rio!
The local artisanal ice cream scoop shop is going to be located in the space next to Starbucks on Boardwalk Place as a summer pop-up (updated on 6/8 to reflect the pop-up status of the store).
For those unfamiliar with Moorenko’s, they earned The MoCoShow’s #1 ice cream spot in MoCo award when we released our list back in 2017.
Their original location has been in Downtown Silver Spring at 8030 Georgia Avenue for almost 15 years and they have recently opened an Ellicott City location.
Founder, Susan Soorenko says “We wanted to create an ice cream that would make people fall in love. My favorite thing is watching people taste our ice cream for the first time—when they stop whatever they’re doing to savor the experience.”

Last November we broke the news of Mission BBQ taking over the old Ruby Tuesday location in Germantown (19800 Century Blvd).
Many have asked us if they still plan to open this location and the answer is yes.
Unfortunately, we were recently told that Mission BBQ doesn’t expect to open until fall 2019, with November being the target (about a year from when it was announced).
La Gelatteria, a gelato and espresso bar, is opening this Friday, 5/31 in Kensington.

La Gelatteria will also have coffee and snacks available for purchase.
For about a week there has been a peacock strutting around the Derwood area.
Initially two peacocks were loose, but one was quickly found. The other has been photographed several times as Derwood residents desperately tried to get the bird back home.
Sadly, the bird made its way up to New Hampshire Ave. and was hit and killed by a car last night.
We are told the birds belong to a very religious man who owns them because they are very spiritual animals.
A sad ending to a captivating story out of Derwood. R.I.P. to the peacock 🦚.
Sonia Vee’s Cupcakes is coming to the Kentlands.
We don’t currently have an opening date for the cupcake spot, but it will be located at 344 Main Street in the location formerly occupied by Capital Investment Management and Dr. Singh (who can now be found at 208 Main Street according to a sign on the door).
Rolls ‘n Rice, which has been at 1701 Rockville Pike in the Congressional Village Shopping Center for a decade, will close permanently on Thursday, 5/30.
The location also used to be home to Lemon Tree.

This past weekend we broke the news of Wawa coming to MoCo and now we are excited to let you know that Royal Farms is next!
Last night we had Gaithersburg City Councilmember Neil Harris on episode 47 of The MoCoShow and we discussed Royal Farms coming to an agreement to open their first MoCo location in Gaithersburg. Podcast available below (Royal Farms news discusses at approximately 33:20).
Neil told us that when the developer bought the property across from Gaithersburg High School where the Wawa is going, they initially considered 7-Eleven. The Gaithersburg City Council asked if it was possible to bring something new to the area “like a Wawa or Royal Farms.”
Though Wawa won out at the property across from Gaithersburg High School, Royal Farms has come to an agreement to also come to Gaithersburg off of 355 near The Spectrum at Watkins Mill.
Royal Farms opened its first store in Baltimore in 1959 and currently has over 200 locations in the Mid-Atlantic.
