The walls are going up at Top Golf in Germantown!
Topgolf is a game that ANYONE can play (and win). Score points by hitting micro-chipped golf balls at giant dartboard-like targets on an outfield. ... The fun and games don't stop there; you can even indulge in delicious food and drinks brought to you while you play.
Its expected to be ready to open in late 2019 and will be located on Century Blvd/270.
We’re working with Explore Kensington to let you know about all the great things going on in town!

A walk though the Kentlands revealed new signs of businesses that will be coming to the neighborhood later in 2019.
MOD Pizza, which specializes in serving individual artisan-style pizzas and salads “superfast” since 2008, will be opening in the Kentlands later this year. It will be located on Center Point Way, across from Cinepolis, next to the old Healthy Back location.
Cinco De Mayo, a Mexican Restaurant and tequila bar, will be moving in to 640 Center Point Way. It will take over the old Healthy Back location.
Barrels & Brews is taking over the old Potomac Pizza/Village Deli location at 625 Center Point Way. The same logo was used for a Facebook event in Spokane, Washington back in 2017. We are thinking a Brew Belly type of concept that features beer, wine, and food, but that’s just speculation at this point.
Cinepolis is taking over the Paragon movie theater location at 629 Center Point Way. The luxury movie theater is expected to have 540 seats and offer food/drinks while watching regularly changing movies in reclining chairs.
Tutti Frutti frozen yogurt will be taking over part of the old Last Mango, Zodiac Grill, Tony and James, 44 Sports Bar and Grill, and most recently Largent’s Restaurant and Bar location (654 Center Point Way).
Berries & Bowls, the “Superfood Cafe” will be located at 120 Market St., just opposite of the Wine Harvest on the paseo. They will specialize is açaí bowls, smoothies, fresh juices, and more.
Dog Haus Biergarten, a fast casual hot dog and burger spot that serves beer, wine, and frozen drinks will open on Center Point Way across from Cinepolis.
Back in September we discussed a rumor regarding Lifetime Athletic moving in to the old Sears location in Montgomery Mall.
At that time we were not given confirmation, but I just got off the phone with a Lifetime employee from the Rockville/Potomac location and was told that they will be opening a Montgomery Mall location “within the next couple years.”
I asked if that meant the location on Seven Locks Road would close and was told that the plan is to keep all three MoCo locations open (Gaithersburg, Rockville/Potomac, and the new Bethesda location).
Now that this has been confirmed, I can tell you that I have heard rumors regarding a possible rooftop pool at the new Montgomery Mall location!
I was not given a specific timetable for when this will occur.
As expected, Governor Larry Hogan vetoed a bill that would allow Maryland school districts to decide when their school year would begin and a bill that would increase minimum wage to $15 an hour for the entire state of Maryland.
Since the General Assembly passed the bills by veto-proof margins, it is expected that a vote will take place in the coming days to override the governor’s veto.
In 2016, Hogan’s executive order mandated that all Maryland public schools must start after after Labor Day and end by June 15th. If the override occurs, the new bill would allow school districts to start prior to Labor Day, as MCPS has done in recent years prior to the executive order.
Montgomery County already has a plan in place to raise minimum wage to $15 an hour for employees of all businesses by 2024 (2021 for employees of large businesses and 2023 for employees mid-size businesses).
The state minimum wage is currently at $10.10 an hour. Governor Hogan proposed an increase to $12.10 an hour that would allow for increases if surrounding states were to do the same. Currently, Pennsylvania and Virginia’s minimum wage is $7.25, Delaware is at $8.25. D.C. is at $13.25 per hour and will increase to $15 on July 1st, 2020.
Earlier this evening we were informed that the last remaining Smashburger location in MoCo (1800 Rockville Pike Suite A) was served an eviction notice.
A customer told us that she was able to place her online order and arrived at Smashburger to find the restaurant dark and empty with an eviction notice posted on the window.
The Gaithersburg and Germantown locations closed in 2017, leaving the Rockville restaurant as the standalone Smashburger location in MoCo before today.
Last September we reported that Hip Hop Fish & Chicken is coming to MoCo! Since then, many have expressed concern at how long it was taking. The news could be worse, but we’re told Silver Spring/Burtonsville will have to wait until the fall for the restaurant to open.
The restaurant is located in Briggs Chaney shopping center in the spot that used to be home to Marina's Pollo A La Brasa (13820 Old Columbia Pike).
Hip Hop Fish & Chicken has 19 other locations sprinkled across Maryland and 1 in D.C. They specialize in fish and chicken platters as well as wings, fries, and lots of other sides.
Tropical Smoothie Cafe’s second MoCo location will open on April 1st in Gaithersburg Square (their other location is on Elm St. in Bethesda). It will be located next to Minerva Express and near Chipotle and Quickfire.
Tropical Snoothie Cafe features specialty smoothies, wraps, bowls, flatbreads, quesadillas and sandwiches, all made fresh to order. Many menu items feature superfoods like spinach, kale, mango, black beans, and chia, and smoothies can be made with almond milk. The Café also offers catering services.
The Gaithersburg Tropical Smoothie hours are Monday – Friday 7 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Saturday 8 a.m. – 9 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.
DMV Empanadas, a regular at local farmer’s markets, is opening a brick and mortar location in Olde Towne Gaithersburg.
For over a year the empanadas have made appearances from Fairfax to Baltimore and everywhere in between. In January they announced they’d be opening their first location in the old Vocelli spot at 113 E Diamond Ave in Olde Towne Gaithersburg.
They plan to open at some point in April, but don’t have an exact date yet.
MoCo App Creators Release Android Version of MyMCPS+ App, Plan to Create Android Version of MoCoSnow App by Next Winter
Montgomery County app developers, Solomon Sapiro and Kundan Razdan, have released the android version of the popular MyMCPS+ app.
Both are 2018 Wootton graduates and University of Maryland computer science majors. Sapiro is the creator of the MyMCPS+, MoCoSnow, and BrickBreaker iOS apps. He has wanted to develop apps for androids and has finally made it happen along with his fellow developer, Kundan Razdan. The duo plans on releasing an android version of the popular school closing and delay Prediction app, MoCoSnow by next winter.
MCPS moved away from EdLine a couple years back, which was used by students and parents/guardians to monitor grades.
A program called MyMCPS is now used by the county and the website allows students to view their grades.
MyMCPS+ is a grade manager app that allows students and parents to view current grades and see how specific grades on upcoming assignment can affect the overall grade. It uses a color coded system that clearly identifies each different type of grade and is simple enough for anyone from an elementary school student to a grandparent (and everyone in between) to use.
You can download the FREE app here.
