If you listened to last week’s episode of The MoCoShow podcast, you would have heard that Angel’s Pizza & Pasta is coming to the Wheaton Mall food court.
With the recent news of KPS closing and Mezzeh relocating to Aspen Hill, the food court took a bit of a hit, but quality pizza & handmade pasta in a fast-casual setting should help anyone feeling down.
Chef Angel Mendoza is a certified Pizzaiolo, and has spent decades honing his craft at 2Amy’s and RedRocks Pizzeria.
The restaurant is expected to open in early March.
Gaithersburg Craft Smoked Barbecue, available only through Uber Eats, is now open.
To my knowledge, this is the first restaurant of its kind in our area. It is serving Gaithersburg and surrounding areas and is only available through the food delivery service, Uber Eats.
They offer BBQ (brisket, ribs, fried chicken sandwiches, pulled pork, etc.), sides (coleslaw, Mac & cheese, rice & beans, etc.), and desserts (Oreo brownie, Saturday morning cereal treats, and cocoa crispy treats).
The food is prepared by Dogfish Alehouse in their Gaithersburg restaurant.
Bloomberg recently released their 2019 Richest Places list, and two MoCo areas were on it.
Travilah (an area without a designated zip code whose residents generally identify as living in Potomac, Rockville, Darnestown, or North Potomac) came in 24th, up one spot from their 2018 ranking. Their average household income is $284,682.
Potomac came in 50th, down 4 spots from their 2018 ranking. The house average household income there is $248,189.
The median household income for Montgomery County as a whole, according to the latest information available from the United States Census Bureau, is $103,178.
According to a Reuters report, Payless will be closing all 2,100+ of their U.S. stores.
The discount shoe retailer currently has 7 MoCo locations that are all expected to be closed at some point between March and the end of May.
The online store will be closing as well and all stores are expected to have “Out of Business” sales as soon as next week.
According to their website Payless can be found in Montgomery Mall, Ellsworth Place Mall, Lakeforest Mall, Wheaton Mall, Montgomery Village Crossing, Clarksburg Premium Outlets, and White Oak Shopping Center.
Mezeh Mediterranean Grill has closed their Wheaton Mall location and will be relocating to the Aspen Hill shopping center. No opening date or exact location within the shopping center has been provided.
The Maryland based chain opened their first store in Annapolis in 2013. The fast casual eatery offers rice and salad bowls with a variety of Mediterranean meats, spices, sauces and toppings.
Their other MoCo location can be found in Downtown Crown (Gaithersburg).
Per Pike & Rose:
Federal Realty announced today that modern furniture and home décor destination, West Elm, will be opening in North Bethesda’s Pike & Rose in between Pinstripes and The Block.
The 11,572-square-foot store is scheduled to open fall 2019 and will be West Elm’s third location in the Washington, DC metro area.
Today I spoke with an employee of OneLife Fitness in Rockville who told me that the gym is actively looking at Olney for a new MoCo location.
US Fitness, the parent company of OneLife Fitness and Sport & Health, sold a majority stake to two investment firms this past summer. Currently the company has nearly 50 gyms (3 different brands) and the investment has been rumored to include over $50 million for expansion.
I was told that nothing has been signed, but that negotiations are ongoing with an unconfirmed location in Olney. I was also told that Giant is in negotiations with a gym and that they are not currently accepting new offers at this time.
While there is no confirmation from either end, it seems like the writing is on the wall.

Pizza Hut has closed one of their Germantown locations permanently (19790 Crystal Rock Dr.).
Signage was removed a couple weeks back, but the restaurant initially stated they were just remodeling. The windows are now boarded up and the restaurant closed permanently earlier this week.
Calls to the location on Crystal Rock Drive are now being forwarded to Fox Chapel location (19733 Frederick Rd.), which will cover most of the closed location’s delivery area.
We were told that most employees were able to maintain employment with the company after moving to the Fox Chapel location.

The first Dog Haus opened in Pasadena, CA in 2010. 8 years later, they opened their first east coast location in Bethesda (7904 Woodmont Ave).
Today, approximately 10 months after their Bethesda location opened, Bethesda Beat reported that they'll be opening their second location in MoCo when they open up in Kentlands Market Square in Gaithersburg.
For a sneak peek at what to expect, check out our instagram post from our visit to Dog Haus.
While an exact date has not been given, the restaurant is expected to accompany MOD Pizza, Cinepolis Luxury Cinemas, and more in the newly revamped Kentlands later this year.
