Regarding item #11 -- 355, Rockville Pike, and Wisconsin Ave. are all the same road. Two more names for the same road: Hungerford Drive and Frederick Road (all located within MoCo).

The Olney Theatre has been producing shows since 1938 as a summer stock theater. It’s early years featured stars like Helen Hayes, Olivia DeHaviland, and Tallulah Bankhead. Now it’s an official Maryland State Theater and is open year round.

No. 40 is wrong. Besides Rockville, Gaithersburg and Takoma Park, there is Poolesville (incorporated 1867) and Barnesville (incorporated 1888).

It’s not wrong, Helen. The three listed are the only incorporated cities in the county. There are 19 total incorporate municipalities, but they have not been given the title of “city.”

The oldest municipality in Montgomery County is Brookeville, incorporated in 1808, followed by Rockville (1860), Poolesville (1867), Gaithersburg (1878), Barnesville (1888), Takoma Park (1890), Laytonsville (1892), Kensington (1894), Garrett Park (1898), Glen Echo (1904), Somerset (1906), Chevy Chase Village (1910), Town of Chevy Chase (1918), Washington Grove (1937), Village of Chevy Chase, Sections 3 and 5 (1982), Martin's Additions (1985), Chevy Chase View (1993), and North Chevy Chase (1996).

Overall well done. Aside from the corrections already observed by others, I’d say that there’s too much of the lakeforest rio stuff, when, as you opined, there are so many other things which could have been included. Mark Wolfson’s comment about the Olney theater, for example, is far more deserving of a place on the list. And how about all the tony winners who are from MoCo? How about the mystery writers who’ve lived here? You skipped those and more in favor of lakeforest-used-to-be-a-good-mall? If shopping matters so much, why not say that congressional plaza used to be congressional airport?

Hey Donna and Krushchev,

Impossible to please everyone, but I don’t think anything was mentioned excessively and there were many things left out (only went with 100 out of thousands of things that could have been listed).

Donna, you mentioned corrections, but I don’t think anything was incorrect on the list.

Regarding item 61, my admittedly unscientific sample of people I knew who live in Olney pronounce the first syllable to rhyme with ""hole." I generally have also heard TV news to use that pronunciation. My parents grew up in Philadelphia, and I made many visits there. There is a major road there named Olney, and I have always heard that street pronounced with the first syllable rhyming with "doll." Does anyone know if there an official pronunciation of "olney." I also wonder the source of the claim that the majority of residence also pronounce it to rhyme with "doll."
